Community Art Programs

My community arts organization is Arternativs.

Its  vision is to engage diverse audiences in art making; to use art making as a tool for self expression and to usher that expression toward opportunities for social change.

Its mission is to collaborate with community members; to use collective creation techniques; to let the issues fuel our expression, then to celebrate our creations through public culminating events.

Its goals are to raise self-esteem, raise cultural consciousness, and raise appreciation for the arts as action for social change.

Art Workshops

Arternativ's workshops are one day, to one-week events. They are designed to support community cultural happenings and other significant events in our communities. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy artmaking through storytelling, lantern making, assemblage, collage, printmaking and a range of other art forms such as painting, drawing, and creative writing. To honor our collaborative works, we will have a culminating event in the community where all of our family and friends will be invited to attend.

Artist Residencies

I provide short- and long-term, project-based art sessions for schools, and community organizations. I work with all age groups, and provide memorable experiences designed to explore ideas of Social Justice. Community engagement is paramount to the mission of Arternativs. Culminating events, where the artwork can be displayed and enjoyed in local communities, or art venues are strongly encouraged.

Civic Engagement

Arternativs uses Open-Ended approaches to create public works of art, and temporary installations. The participants through the Action Research process determine the content and focus of the work. In an experiential and organic process we begin with activities from which an idea or topic of discussion will arise. To pursue the topic in-depth we look at various visual art forms. The process is collaborative, and the focus is about change – uplifting the voice of the participants and their community. My ultimate goal is to get people to learn that they have more in common than they believe and have that understanding develop into increased respect and appreciation.
